Proceeds from this fundraiser will support the ongoing battle against the 1,500-acre open-pit mine and quarry planned by Vulcan Materials between Bulverde and New Braunfels—just four miles north of Bracken Cave. Bat Conservation International will also receive a portion of the proceeds.

Hors d’oeuvres, beer, and wine begin at 6:30 p.m. A representative of Bracken Cave Preserve will give a bat talk at the cave, and the bats are expected to emerge at approximately 8:00 p.m. Tickets will go on sale soon! Guest Speaker: Katherine Romans

Hill Country Alliance Executive Director Katherine Romans brings a decade of nonprofit and legislative experience to the Hill Country Alliance. She worked for several years as a legislative aide for the Committee on Natural Resources within the United States House of Representatives, and has experience with both local and national nonprofits. Katherine now serves as executive director for the Hill Country Alliance, and has led the organization’s landowner outreach program for more than two years. In that role, she connected landowners within the Pedernales River Basin to technical and financial resources within the Texas Parks and Wildlife Department. Katherine holds a Master’s degree in environmental management from the Yale School of Forestry and Environmental Studies. She also serves on the board of the Hill Country Land Trust.

SPRING BRANCH—Preserve Our Hill Country Environment Foundation and Stop 3009 Vulcan Quarry will host their third annual Bluebonnet Extravaganza Dinner & Auction on Saturday, April 2. This year’s event will be held at the historic Knibbe Ranch in Spring Branch, one of the few remaining Century Heritage ranches in Texas.

All proceeds from the fundraiser will support the ongoing legal battle against the Texas Commission on Environmental Quality (TCEQ) and the 1,500-acre open-pit mine and quarry planned by Vulcan Materials between Bulverde and New Braunfels. The preservation groups will also raise awareness of the negative impacts of poorly supervised aggregate mining and operations in Comal County and throughout the Texas Hill Country.

In April 2021, Stop 3009 Vulcan Quarry and Friends of Dry Comal Creek won an unprecedented victory in Travis County District Court, when Judge Maya Guerra Gamble reversed and vacated the air permit TCEQ granted to Vulcan Materials for the proposed Comal County quarry.

Milann Guckian, president of Stop 3009 Vulcan Quarry and Preserve Our Hill Country Environment, stated, “We are extremely pleased with Judge Guerra Gamble’s decision. This is a win for Comal County residents, our beautiful Hill Country, and the entire state of Texas. It is a positive step forward in the process we have undertaken to preserve quality of life and our natural resources.”

TCEQ and Vulcan are now appealing that decision to the Third Court of Appeals. Oral arguments before the court will likely be held next, but a date has not yet been scheduled. April’s fundraiser will enable grassroots-level community groups to continue fighting to protect the air, water, and natural resources in Comal County and the Hill Country.

The event will feature fabulous Texas BBQ, local libations, unique photo opportunities, music, dancing, and more. Silent and live auctions will top off the evening as we toast everything that we love about our one-of-a-kind Hill Country. Rules

1. Potential buyers to place bid by 5 p.m. on December 1^st. Bidders will email secret bid to stop3009vulcanquarry@gmail.com anytime within the one week time frame.  Emails must include auction item name and number for item being bid on, the amount of the bid, and your contact information (email address/phone #/delivery address).  For the “Subject” line please use “Online Secret Auction”.  All bids will be time-stamped when emailed, first highest bidder or first “Buy It Now” bidder wins the prize!!  Please use bid increment amounts for any bids above the minimum bid (i.e. –  minimum bid is $100 and you want to place a higher bid, if increment for that item is $25 then bids can be $125, $150, etc…all the way up to “Buy it Now” Price).
2. We will contact winner by email/phone on December 1^st after 5pm deadline. We will provide billing/payment information and verify delivery address.  Payment time frame is 48 hours. All payments must be received via PayPal/Credit Card by December 3^rd at 5 p.m.  If not received, we will notify next highest bidder.
3. Delivery of items is scheduled for week of December 7^th → 11^th. We will deliver within 50 miles.  A copy of the bid sheet will be used as a receipt and given to winning bidder on delivery.

Experience one of the great wonders of the natural world: the spiraling emergence of over 15 million Mexican free-tailed bats—the largest bat colony on the planet—as they begin their evening hunt.

Proceeds from this fundraiser will support the ongoing battle against the 1,500-acre open-pit mine and quarry planned by Vulcan Materials between Bulverde and New Braunfels—just four miles north of Bracken Cave. Bat Conservation International will also receive a small portion of the proceeds.

Tickets are $55 per person (plus fees). Directions and additional event details will be forwarded following ticket purchase.

Hors d’oeuvres, beer, and wine begin at 6:30 p.m. Bats emerge at approximately 8:00 p.m.

Now What Happens?

It will be approximately 180 days before the judge renders a decision in the matter. But now that the six-month legal fight has begun, fundraising for legal fees and scientific experts is critical.

Were You Named an Affected Party?

On Wednesday, the judge instructed individuals who are named affected parties to align with a group. (The judge’s written order listing all affected parties is available here.)

Stop 3009 Vulcan Quarry/Friends of Dry Comal Creek is represented by a leading environmental law firm, Frederick, Perales, Allmon & Rockwell, who will be building the case, writing briefs, conducting discovery and deposition on the applicant, organizing expert testimony, documents, and more. Aligning with our group allows you to remain involved as a named affected party—and at a much lower cost to you in time and dollars.

Important to Know

Our attorney represents our group as a whole—not any one individual. Cost for legal representation and scientific experts in the six-month contested case hearing is estimated at $150,000. So far, we have raised over $30,000 and invested over 10,000 volunteer hours.

Not Named an Affected Party?

If you couldn’t make the meeting on Wednesday, you aren’t an officially named party—even though you are sure to be affected by Vulcan’s quarry! But you can stay in the game by becoming a contributor. We will carry on the fight for you—but we need your help!
